Campaign smiles

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The Campaign for a Queen’s Park Community Council is racing towards its target of 800 signatures, with another 200 signatures added since our last update just a week ago.  We now have over 600 signatures with fewer than 200 left to collect.

At an enjoyable social evening in the Queen’s Park Forum office last week the dedicated door-knocking team of resident volunteers was buoyed by the latest count, and the delicious food that everyone bought to share.  Spirits are high among the ever expanding group of residents eager to be involved in the campaign.  New friendships are being formed, recipies shared and support networks created.  Those involved come from very diverse backgrounds but are united in their conviction that they know best how to create the bonds of a strong community.  The evidence suggests they aren’t wrong!

The residents’ campaign has also attracted significant media attention, this week’s edition of The Economist is the latest to feature Queen’s Park residents’ efforts to become the first community council in London. Click here for the full article.

Well done Avenues 87.9 FM

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Thank you Avenues Youth Project – the quality of programming this year has been second to none.  The Community slot between 12 and 4pm Mon-Fri has been particularly popular. Residents, community groups, the police, the NHS the council and many more have taken part in a very informative, entertaining and well thought out programme throughout this year’s broadcast.  Particularly touching was the appeal made by the family of innocent murder victim Daniel Omari Smith of Queen’s Park who was shot on the Harrow Road last year.  It was a reminder of the serious issues facing the community that Avenues Youth Project is helping to tackle.

The fact that young people are behind the month long radio broadcast,  particularly at a time when the Project is facing a serious squeeze to its budget, is testament to the professionalism and dedication of the extraordinary staff team there.  It’s no wonder that senior youth worker of 30 years Carol Bent is known by generations of people who have passed through the club in that time simply as “Legend”.

Campaign surges past halfway mark

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The resident-led Campaign for a Queen’s Park Community Council has hit overdrive!  The campaign which was only launched at the end of January set itself the difficult task of raising 800 signatures on a petition before the end of March when funding for the existing Queen’s Park Forum comes to an end.  Only two weeks into the campaign and more than 400 signatures have been collected so far.

What has been fantatsic is the level of support from local residents both in the campaign group and on the doorstep.  Everyone has been reporting very high levels of awareness of, and satisfaction with, the Queen’s Park Forum, the possible demise of which is proving a decisive factor in clinching their support for the Campaign to establish a Community Council in its place.

Queen’s Park red brick housing stock is the centre of a stunning commission by Queen’s Park Forum.  The three meter wide canvass was skillfully illustrated by local street artist Brian Okello, from Mozart Estate W10.

This artwork is a stylized vision of the individual estates that make up Queen’s Park and paints a singularly positive image of Queen’s Park as a great place to live.  It is also a great place to love - happy valentines day Queen’s Park.
