Community Champions
A new health project recruiting local resident volunteers has just launched on the Mozart Estate.
Community champions are local people who volunteer their time to connect friends, families and neighbours with local services, and spread important messages about health and well-being. Through the programme the champions gain new skills, training and experience that can help progress their own careers.
The Mozart Estate has a strong community ethos and a wealth of services on the doorstep but health indicators continue to be poor and life expectancy is significantly lower than neighbouring areas. Community Champions are working hard within the community to create a healthier future for people living on the estate.
The project has been commissioned by North West London and is being delivered by Development Trust.
TheĀ initial focus has been dental health for families with young children living on the Mozart. Poor dental health amongst local children is a big issue and the number one cause of hospital admissions. The Champions are working closely with dental health experts and local dentists to raise awareness and change behaviour to cut the risk of tooth decay and problems it causes.
The team also likes to have fun and bring people together to socialise, network and meet their neighbours at community events. The Smile Family Fun Day and Winter Wonderland events have given the project a great start and raised awareness of the project locally.
Look out for the champions who will be out and about on the Mozart⦠the team is growing fast and the lookout for new members with lots of exciting new projects coming up in the new Year.
